Very soon, even within this year, Austin, and particularly downtown Austin will be transformed. Now, driving in from the south, one cannot recognize the downtown skyline. Already more new towers are under construction. More are approved. Even more are on the desk of city planners.
There is no point mourning too much for the lost Austin weirdness. many of our funky haunts are gone or slated for demolition. But money is in the air.

Trammel Crow is now building 35 stories near corner of Cesar Chavez and Nueces to be leased by Google. Concrete trucks are lined up. Iconic sail-like design. Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects. & DPR Construction. Accommodating 5K employees, it is not clear how quickly it will fill, but Google plans to move in 2023.
The University of Texas system announced a $160 million 17 story office building — just east of Waterloo Park, on what was the Brackenridge Hospital campus. They hope it will be a flagship in an emerging innovation district.
Intracorp Projects from Canada has pre-sold 30% of their 322 unit, 40 story condo tower. Its 49 floors will tower over Lady Bird Lake. Page Sutherland Page designed the tower & units, while Michael Hsu designed the common areas and amenity floor. Flintco LLC general contractor.
Natiivo in already under construction in the Rainey Street Historic District. It is touted as a new hospitality concept from NGD Homesharing out of Miami FL. More than 50% of the 249 units have been spoken for. Plans are that units not being used will be rented out on Airbnb
At 17th and Guadalupe (where Wm Gammon is, next to the Clay Pit Restaurant) a 28- story condo tower is proposed with an art gallery, neighborhood market, and coffee shop on first floor. Construction should start very quickly.
Recent shifts have happened with a bankruptcy or two. However, just today, Facebook has announced expansion in Austin and Hewlet Packard has announced a move in, from California. For more information, please see the report in the Austin Business Journal.
